The Casements

A walking tour of the Casements Mansion in Ormond Beach is a fascinating thing to do. You can see the actual house as it was when it was constructed, but also the house where John D. Rockefeller lived at the time. You can also see how the house’s architecture reflects the region. For example, the Casements Mansion’s roof is similar to the main structure of the original Whitney Tower, and the home’s windows are similar to those of the skyscrapers of the time.

When John D. Rockefeller lived in this mansion, he had four young children, and he didn’t have much money. As a result, the Casements Mansion was cramped and looked quite small. Because of this, the home was quite cold in the winter, but that was all right because it was ventilated by giant windows, known as arched windows. The Casements Mansion would have been as cold as any Georgian home from the era if they had not built their home using mechanical ventilation.

Some of the Casements’ original features include wooden beams that supported the roof of the mansion, fireplaces in the rooms, and a back door that opened up onto a balcony overlooking the Halifax River. But as long as you are here, why not stay for a night? The Casements’ Beach Club on the second floor is a popular place to enjoy a cocktail with a view of the Halifax River.

You can also see some of the family treasures that were housed in the Casements Mansion. These include an original Bible and the original Bible text, the first edition of the Holy Bible, the scroll of the Book of Acts, and many others. While there, stop by the archives, which includes early photographs and newspapers. The Casements Mansion Museum provides a place to learn about what John D. Rockefeller did for charity while he was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist in New York City.

Do take the time to go see the Casements Mansion in Ormond Beach. If you want to go, make sure you plan to spend some time in the area. The Castillo de San Agustin and its adjacent gardens are great places to go, and if you are interested in American history, the Casements Mansion’s basement is a wonderful place to visit, too.
